My interests include syntactic theory, especially the interface of syntax with morphology, phonology and semantics. In all my work, I try to find out to what extent grammatical properties of linguistic expressions can be explained in terms of syntactic rules or in terms of principles that regulate the interface of syntax with other modules of grammar. I draw mostly on data from Basque and Romance languages (mostly Spanish), and concentrate on those areas of these languages that can help us illuminate these theoretical aspects of language. In our recent work on Basque morphology, Andrew Nevins and I argue for a highly modular account of Basque verbal inflection where both syntactic principles and an articulated theory of morphology play an important role. I have recently become very interested in ellipsis phenomena, and am working on an analysis of certain elliptical questions (mostly in Spanish) that, I argue, involve deletion in a postsyntactic phonological component.
