I am interested in how African Americans use language to construct multidimensional identities and how these constructions are perceived and evaluated across different listener populations. I draw on both ethnographic and experimental techniques to explore both the linguistic construction of race and the process of racialization. To date, I have done fieldwork in both Bakersfield, California and Rochester, New York.
