Dr. Jacob Phillips is interested in language variation and change. He employs experimental methodologies in speech production and perception to better understand the mechanisms that lead to the emergence and spread of sound change across a community. In other collaborative work, he is interested in the role of sensory feedback in the link between speech perception and production. Specifically, his work asks how individuals with impaired or inhibited somatosensory feedback categorize ambiguous speech sounds and how they adjust their speech planning to changing conditions.
