Where Do Evidentials Come From, and Where Do They Go? Lessons from the Balkans, the Caucasus, and Adjacent Areas

In connection with a chapter I am writing for the Oxford Handbook of Evidentiality, I will bring together material from more than forty years of my own field work and other research (first published in Friedman 1977 and most recently in Friedman 2014) to discuss answers to the questions posed in the title. At issue is the diachronic development of evidentials in both transmission and diffusion and their origins in both lexicon and grammar.
