Topics in Sociolinguistics: On Place Identity

In this seminar we explore the notion of place identity, as it has been studied in sociolinguistics. We'll begin the course examining seminal texts in the field, understanding different dialectological approaches to observing and characterizing cross-regional- and intra-regional variation. We will continue to expand our understanding of the relationship between language and place by drawing on theory from contiguous fields. Some of the questions we'll discuss are: What does it mean to belong to a place? How does regionality interact with other dimensions of identity? How does "place" get operationalized in sociolinguistics?
