Morphology & Syntax workshop

November 4, 2022 | 12:30PM
Rosenwald 301

The Morphology & Syntax workshop will be meeting this Friday, November 4th 2022 at 12:30pm in Rosenwald 301. Kutay Serova (UChicago) will be presenting his work on Accusatives with Passives in 16th century Chaghatay.

Abstract:

I will present unfinished work regarding accusative-marking on (seemingly) demoted agents of (seemingly) passive verb forms in Chaghatay, a historical and literary Turkic language used in Central Asia most actively between the 15th and 16th. I will be presenting data from the Baburnama, the 16th century memoir of Mirza Zahir Ud-Din Muhammad Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire, and one of the few long prose texts in the language, and try to make headway with respect to the following essential questions: (i) whether these patterns are true syntactic passivization or an impersonal, and (ii) how the case realization works.

Hope to see you all there!

Our schedule for the remainder of the fall quarter is as follows:
