In this week's meeting of the Morphology & Syntax Workshop, I will be leading a paper discussion on Abels & Neeleman's 2023 article titled 'e' regarding empty categories and structural typology.

Short abstract provided below:

'e' by Klaus Abels and Ad Neeleman
Abels and Neeleman investigate asymmetries in cross-linguistic syntactic structure typology through a self-paced reading experiment. They discuss structural direction topics such as headedness harmony, parsing of rightward extraposed elements, and Greenberg's Universal 20 (1963) regarding ordering of nominal modifiers, and propose an analysis of Universal 20 based on parsing constraints on empty categories, labeled as 'e'. We will be briefly walking through the experimental results and focusing on the predictions of their analysis for right vs. leftwards displacement and headedness direction.
