Social Sciences, 302

This Friday, April 19, 2024, Akshay Aitha will be leading a paper discussion on two papers.
We will be meeting in Social Sciences #302, 12:30-2:30pm as usual.

The papers are provided below. As these are not short reads, skimming through them is enough for participation, but deeper reading is welcomed if you are so inclined:

Here is a synopsis of the leading questions of the discussion from Akshay that could help the reading and discussion:

My goal here is to try and understand the lay of the land when it comes to discussions about 'readjustment' – why is it that so many scholars seem opposed to it on conceptual grounds? What are the different workarounds that exist in the literature? These two papers are very often cited as giving popular/strong arguments against readjustment. Specifically, I have built an analysis of some Telugu facts that some may argue involves readjustment, and I want to understand how this analysis (assuming it's on the right track) can contribute to this literature.
