I'm excited to announce that the fourth meeting of the Morphology & Syntax workshop this quarter will take place this Friday, November 15th, from 12:30 - 2:30 PM CT in Classics 405 or online (link). We are happy to welcome our very own Mattie Wechsler, who will be presenting work related to a talk she will be giving at the LSA Annual Meeting in January. The title and abstract follow:

Flip it & reverse it: A Mirror Principle-compliant analysis of rigid argument & affix order in Shona

Much of the literature on the valence-altering affixes in Bantu (such as the causative & applicative) is on CARP-related Mirror Principle violations & concerns the degree to which affix order is morphophonologically templatic or morphosyntactically representative of underlying structure. Little, in contrast, has been written about the order of arguments that arise from the co-occurrence of these affixes. As a novel contribution, this talk derives both the order of causative & applicative affixes, as well as the order of arguments (causees, applied objects, & direct objects) in Shona. I pursue a phrasal-movement analysis & propose a unified, Mirror Principle-compliant account of both argument & affix orders.

We hope to see you all there! As always, if you want more information about the M&S schedule or other general information about the workshop, please see our website
