Dative Stem Allomorphy in Turkic Pronouns: Suppletion or not?
Kutay Serova (UChicago)

The singular stem of Turkish personal pronouns show a stem change exclusively in the dative case. Given Distributed Morphology conceptions of suppletion as morphosyntactically conditioned vocabulary insertion (Bobaljik 2012), and a growing line of work that argues for a privative case feature hierarchy (Blake 1994, Caha 2009), this is a surprising stem allomorphy because cases that are hypothesized to subsume the structure/features of the "Dative" case do not trigger this stem change. Interestingly, this specific "dative stem allomorphy" is replicated near-identically in the pronominal paradigms of numerous other Turkic languages. I will discuss preliminary work that attempts to decide whether this stem alternation should be analyzed as suppletive allomorphy or a phonological readjustment rule, and the difficulties associated with either approach.
